• Spending Time with Dad

Father & ChildrenI don’t know about you, but I always find it difficult to know what to get my dad for Father’s Day. He doesn’t help when you ask him what he wants, either. He has been known to say, “I broke one of my drill bits; you could get me one of those.” Not that I’m against buying my dad things he needs, but there is just something about buying drill bits as a present that I don’t like. My sister always says, “I want to get you something fun.” I’m sure my dad finds using his drill lots of fun, but it just doesn’t seem fun to me…

You might be wondering why I shared this story with you. Well, this is something that happens to me every single year around Father’s Day. It seems like there would come a time when I would be able to know what my dad wants… or at least tell him not to share his power tool needs. But I do know what my dad likes. My dad likes to garden, to go on hikes, to watch sports (especially baseball and the Yankee’s), and to build things. But most of all, my dad likes to spend time with me and my family. Although he does enjoy when we buy him gifts, I want to get him something that is more meaningful, something that we can spend quality time doing together. I think most dads can relate to this.

So, in the spirit of spending some quality time with Dad this weekend, here are a few ideas that use music!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Maybe your dad likes baseball, like mine, or maybe its another sport. Spend some time in the afternoon playing this game with him. While you are playing, think of songs that remind you of that game. For example, maybe every time you go to a baseball game they play a specific song like “Sweet Caroline” at Red Sox games. Or, maybe your football team has a “fight song.” See how many songs you can come up with and try to sing some of them.

    The Great Outdoors

My dad likes to go camping. Camping might be a little much for your Father’s Day plans, but doing something outside isn’t! Try going for a hike, fishing, or even just having a small campfire outside. While you are enjoying these activities, talk about your favorite camp songs. I’m sure you dad has some fun ones he learned when he was younger. Share and sing some of these songs together.

    Daddy Was a Racecar Driver

Does you dad like cars? Going to a car show could be an great thing to do with your dad on Father’s Day. If you go to a car show or not, there are lots of songs about cars. Its doesn’t have to say the name of a car ( like “Little Deuce Coupe” by The Beach Boys), it could just talk about cars (like “Car Wash” by Rose Royce). Try to name or sing as many songs as you can!

    Personalize It!

Maybe you just want to make something for you dad for Father’s Day. Why not write him a song! You can rewrite the words to one of his favorites, or come up with an original. Write out the words to give to him in a card, and either sing or record it for him.

I hope this gave you some great idea’s for Father’s Day. Do you have any other ideas for things to do with Dad? Or maybe other ways to sing with Dad this weekend? Share them with us in the comments!
