Our Recommended AppsThis month we are highlighting some of the apps that we find ourselves frequently using in sessions, recommending to clients, and sharing around the office. While technology can be a polarizing subject on many fronts, we feel that when used with a specific purpose in mind (such as skill building), it can be a very helpful tool.

Some of the coolest apps I grew to love I used while in internship with my preteens and adolescents at Grafton. Here are just a few of the apps I would recommend for those ages 12-21.

    BeatWaveSelf Expression

The possibilities for creativity and music writing are endless with this app, especially for the client who has an appreciation for hip/hop or EDM genres of music. This provides an individual with a high success rate of achieving a product while having the ability to express themselves musically (and lyrically if they so desire).

    edjingSelf Expression / Self-Control

Who says you need actual turn tables to be a DJ? With an iPhone, android, or tablet, one can create their own versions of music to their liking. This is great for self-control and patience. Mixing music isn’t an easy task, and it requires focus, an ear for the music, and willpower. For clients working on impulse control, frustration tolerance, and emotion regulation, this is the perfect app to address those skills while creating a musical product that they will be proud to share once finished.

GarageBand – It’s just all around awesome.

GarageBand can address a plethora of goals, from communication to social skills (if you’re working in a group). I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t a fan of GarageBand when introduced. There’s a lot to take in, and it can be overwhelming learning all the ins and outs of the app. That being said, nothing says improved self-esteem like writing a song and learning the ends and out writing the instrumentals and vocals to back your song.

We want to hear from you! Are there any apps that you currently use with your teens/young adults at home?
