As I sat down to write this blog post at one of my favorite coffee shops, with Christmas music playing, I am reminded of the song “My Favorite Things.” You know, the song from The Sound of Music that someone decided belonged in the holiday music category, too? Well, in the spirit of that song, I am going to share a few of my favorite things with you, and hopefully have you share a few of your favorite things with me! Here we go!
What instrument (or instruments) do you play, and what is your favorite?
The first instrument I ever played was the piano. I started lessons at the age of 7, and have played it ever since. Throughout my life I have played a variety of band/orchestra instruments, until I decided on the oboe in high school. I have played ever since, and it was my major instrument in college (although I don’t play as much as I would like anymore). I also play the guitar, which I learned in college. I don’t know if I can pick a favorite from the 3 that I play… I love them all for a variety of reasons. However, my favorite that I don’t play would have to be the cello. I just love how beautiful it sounds!
What is your favorite kind of music to listen to?
I am in love with Christmas music! Starting in November, that is pretty much all you will hear me playing in my apartment and car. However, outside of the holiday season I really like folk and pop music. My favorite new album right now is Adele’s 25, and is basically the only thing that has I have listened to this December that is not Christmas music.
What is your favorite Disney movie?
Cinderella! I have always loved this movie, and will still watch it on days when I’m just hanging out at home with nothing to do. However, the first movie I ever remember getting for Christmas was Toy Story, and this has also always been a favorite as well. So I guess that I have two favorite Disney movies.
Do you have a favorite holiday/holiday tradition?
My favorite holiday, hands down, is Christmas. I love the weather (though we have not had much of that this year), the atmosphere, and just how joyful and happy most everyone is during this season. I also enjoy giving gifts to people, and there is no better time of year then Christmas for that! As for holiday traditions, I really like what my family does on Christmas Eve night. We always start the evening by going to church for a candle light service. When we come home we make a late dinner/snack of homemade egg rolls, shrimp cocktail and eggnog (I know, it sounds gross, but I totally love it!). We always get one family gift on Christmas Eve, and we hide a pickle ornament on the tree to decide who opens it. Whoever finds the pickle first gets to open the present (usually a game or a movie). We then enjoy our snack and present as a family before going to bed. I just love Christmas Eve!
