7K0A0686Every day in our music therapy sessions there are spontaneous statements from clients, families, and staff that provide valuable feedback on the work we do. In an effort to capture those moments, we initiated Feedback Friday.

We here at Noteable Progressions all love our jobs helping people reach their goals through music. What I especially enjoy is when someone comes to me, either a client or staff/family member, and shares how they see music therapy working. This is something that was shared with me when I was at one elder care facility last week.

I travel to Washington County twice a week to provide music therapy services at retirement communities, long term care facilities, and group homes. Many of these facilities see me every other week, but some are just once a month. When I walked into one of these sessions a few weeks ago, the residents were ready and excited for music therapy. Some even remembered what it was from the last time I came… about 4 weeks ago! After the session, I had a few staff members, including nurses and activities staff, come up to me to say how much they loved watching the session. They commented on how much fun the residents had, but also on the range of motion that was worked into the session and how both long-term and short-term memory was stimulated. This gave me an opportunity to share more about what music therapy is and how it is different from music entertainment they also have during the month.

Hearing from staff and families about how music therapy makes a difference in peoples lives is something I always enjoy, but I love when it is specific to the functional goal being addressed. Especially when they are able to observe it from what happens during the session!
